INVOLVING WOMEN IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Smallholder farmers account for 80% of agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa.  Furthermore, women contribute to a higher share of the agricultural labour force. What is more, rural women face many constraints such as right unequalled rights as men do. They are also overwhelmed by domestic obligation and farm duties such as planting, weeding and harvesting produce in addition to family food preparations, fetching water and gathering firewood.

It is challenging for women to attain the same produce outcome as men, due to their constrained access to productive resources such as land, credit, agricultural advisory services and innovations. therefore, it is most imperative to enable women's capacities in meeting their personal and household needs. The success of women will in general put more in their homes and families, providing their families with more nutritious food and keeping them soundly healthy. UN's Food and Agricultural Orgaisation has observed that if women were provided with the same access to productive resources as men, they could expand the yields on their farms by 20 - 30%, which would thusly reduce the number of hungry people globally by 12 - 17%.

Comprehending the challenges women face in the local setting and adapting mechanisms and programmes to mitigate these conditions is worth it. These imply:

  • Including women in marketing, the farm produces, giving them more monetary autonomy and a superior thought of market costs so they can suitably adjust their farming businesses.

  • Conducting training sessions often at times suitable for women and providing day nursery facilities.

  • Setting up women's savings and loans groups aiming to develop good monetary records and apply for loans from banks to develop their businesses.

  • Support women with agricultural income-generating projects which they can run from their homes such as beekeeping and poultry among others.

Creating up new opportunities will enable women to articulate new income-generating sources which will help them lift themselves out of destitution. Also, the more women are economically empowered and the more opportunities, the more the entire society will develop and flourish. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pdwbKhociihwX8Jw_eHXfw8ZsyYWwD4Vt2E-h1HmqsE/edit?usp=sharingFurthermore, that is the core reason working with women is so significant since parity for women truly is prosperity for the community.
